Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

Location:
It is located at 180 kms. (115 miles) of Iquitos, department of Loreto, provinces of Requena and Loreto.

Area:
2 million hectares.

Creation:
On February of 1982.

Conservation unit, on the low jungle, for the protection of the fauna and flora of the region.

It constitutes the biggest intangible area in Peru, located in the vertex of the rivers Marañón and Ucayali. It has landscapes of exceptional beauty, aguajales, and tahuampas.

This park lodges the biggest protected area of Peru, and also the biggest area of flooded tropical forests in Peru. Inside of this forest it exists great biodiversity. It is the recommended place for the birds watching.

Species in extinction are protected in this reserve, among them, paiche (Arapaima Gigas) the biggest river-fish of the world; pink dolphin; manati (Trinchechus Manatus) amazonic mammal; 'huapo colorado' monkey (Cacaju Calvus); 'maquisapa' monkey (Ateles Panicus) and the otter (Pteronoura Brasiliensi).

Close to the reserve, exists lodges for tourists. These lodgings organize visits and guide excursions.
